I approach painting with a similar process to the sampling of music appropriating fragments of images to form a new image within a new context. Just as the songs on a CD are often unconnected by subject, my paintings don’t exist as a thematic whole but are individual responses to my environment. The images I collect are without narrative or artistic device of any kind. I catalog images both physically and mentally and am constantly engaged with the connections that may or may not exist .The building of fragments is strongly informed by political and social issues but can just as well be inspired by a conversation an argument or a moment on the train. The cultural language of media as well as techniques and styles of advertising are employed as a device to tell a story within each piece of work. I layer these reproduced images mostly in a monochromatic presentation to reflect memory or storytelling, as a recollection without crispness or complete definition.

My paintings all have a photo reference as their base, after the selection of images or parts of images; I replicate these fragments in acrylic paint on canvas. All initial painting is done in black and white or gray on gray representing the absence of opinion, the image striped bare is a sterilization of meaning allowing me to designate new meaning.
